We enjoyed a complimentary stay at 3 Waves, a Plymouth bed and breakfast. All opinions are my own.
It’s fall in New England, which calls for a girls’ weekend at a bed and breakfast on the historic shores of Plymouth, Massachusetts.
It had been three years since I last saw my dear friend, Olivia, and I couldn’t think of a better way to reconnect near her hometown of Boston than with a wellness retreat at 3 Waves Bed and Breakfast.
This bed and breakfast offers a peaceful getaway that redefines the classic New England stay. On a golden autumn afternoon, we arrived at this charming inn, ready to trade life’s hustle for a weekend of rejuvenation.
Plymouth Bed and Breakfast: Our Arrival
Stepping onto the grounds of 3 Waves Bed and Breakfast, you’re greeted by a quintessential New England scene—blue clapboard colonial charm framed by remontant hydrangeas.
Opened in 2021 by the warm and welcoming Julie and Shawn Talbott, this Plymouth bed and breakfast blends heartfelt hospitality with cutting-edge wellness amenities and a healthy living focus.
Julie’s knack for hospitality and Shawn’s expertise as a Ph.D. nutritional biochemist shape every detail. The six guest rooms, named for rejuvenation themes—Resilience, Serenity, Elevation, Tranquility, Renewal, and Balance—are nestled in a beautiful 19th-century home.
We settled in the Elevation Suite, complete with two bedrooms with king-size beds, a private sitting room, a private bathroom, and breathtaking views of the ocean and gardens.
No detail was left untouched—evening treats like stress chocolates (formulated by Shawn himself) and lavender sleep masks, as well as the innovative Perfect Sleep Pads, allowing us to tailor our sleep temperature, ensured restful nights during our stay. And if you’re a fan of white noise or nature sounds, the B&B also provides an Apple HomePod speaker for every room.
Mornings at 3 Waves: A Healthy Start
When I’m home, I focus on nutrient-dense breakfasts with high-quality ingredients to start my day strong. So I love that the wellness focus continues into the breakfast scene at 3 Waves.
Each morning, guests gather around the dining table for a healthy, family-style breakfast. At 7:30 a.m., guests can begin their day with espresso beverages (served with local milk from a neighborhood farm), teas and a Greek yogurt bar, complete with homemade granola, local fruits and honey. The main breakfast is served at 8:30 a.m.
On the first morning of our stay, we indulged in a delightful breakfast featuring crispy bacon, turkey sausage and fiber-rich waffles, all complemented by a warm berry compote, golden maple syrup and a dollop of butter. The second morning, we started our day with local pastries, Julie’s exquisite quiche and an arugula salad.
Beyond nourishing the body, fostering community is a vital pillar of health and longevity—and at 3 Waves Bed & Breakfast, connecting with others is easy. The inviting family dining table sets the stage for guests to mingle and forge new friendships over breakfast, a highlight of the stay. Olivia and I loved swapping stories with fellow travelers over waffles and quiche.
The Wellness Retreat: A Spa-Like Stay
Food aside, what elevates 3 Waves as a premier Plymouth bed and breakfast is its state-of-the-art wellness center, included with every stay.
This isn’t your typical B&B perk—it’s a transformative retreat with an infrared sauna for detox, massage chairs for muscle relief, a red-light therapy wall for rejuvenation, a dry float bed for sensory calm, and a VR headseat for a virtual escape. They also have a saltwater hot tub for ultimate relaxation after a day of exploring the area.
Shawn’s research on stress metabolism informs the center, with therapies like the cold plunge proven to boost mood in minutes. However, this South Carolina girl doesn’t need a cold plunge to boost her mood in the northern temps. My favorite was the infrared sauna, where I paired my phone with its Bluetooth speaker and unwound to the sound of John Mayer.
Plymouth’s Charm: Historical New England
Set between Boston and Cape Cod, 3 Waves is a perfect base for exploring all Plymouth has to offer. A short walk leads to the harbor, where Plymouth Rock marks the Pilgrims’ 1620 arrival, or to downtown’s cobblestone streets with seafood shacks and boutiques. The Plimoth Patuxet Museums, recreating a 1627 village, offer a living history lesson. A short drive from the B&B can lead to Manomet Point for some of the best views of the cape, the cutest country stores like Bramhall’s, and the infamous cranberry bogs.
During our stay, we ventured to downtown Plymouth, taking in the views of the boats from the harbor and walking the jetty. We had the best time bopping in and out of boutiques and small shops, including Plimoth General Store and Eatery, Sprezzatura Boutique and 3 Daughters Jewelry.
Our culinary adventures in Plymouth kicked off with snacks from Plimoth General Store and Eatery and Vela Juice Bar—don’t miss their Dubai chocolate protein smoothie. For dinner, we savored fresh local seafood by the water at Tavern on the Wharf, but The Tasty earned a top spot on our list with its exceptional dishes (the Brussel sprouts are a must). Before dining there, we sipped pre-dinner drinks across the street at Honey Baby, where I indulged in the finest Old Fashioned of my life—The Switchel—crafted with Elijah Craig bourbon, honey, ginger, and bitters.
Plymouth’s food scene is nothing short of remarkable, tempting me with enough variety to warrant a week-long stay to explore it all. Other gems that caught my eye and came highly recommended include Turmeric House for Indian dishes, Salena and Añejo for Mexican flavors, The Artisan Pig for artisanal pizza, and Mamma Mia’s for authentic Italian fare.
